Did curiosity REALLY kill the cat?
I’m not so sure. If it did, I bet that cat was very fulfilled in its life 😆 😺
When it comes to driving business growth, having a curious mind matters. And having a business culture that fosters and celebrates that innate human curiosity will help it strive.
There’s nothing more dissatisfying than when you’re put back into your “role box” to be told that’s not your area. Why don’t you get on with selling products, or bringing in Leads?
In my experience, and I’ve learned the hard way in the past that when we don’t put our egos to one side and allow a great question to be asked to challenge what we are doing, we are not only preventing our growth but stifling that of others. Sure there needs to be an element of not letting a curious mind get out of control with no structure or capability of where to place it, but the opposite is what prevents growth.
A growth mindset, akin to a curious mind, is what keeps asking the so what question. It keeps driving and drilling down to the point where you can safely say NOW I understand what my customer wants. Now I understand the pain they are going through or what jobs they are juggling daily.
But where a curious mind might be killing the cat is when you've not allowed a place for it to be channeled. Having a well-structured framework in your business that allow for cross-functional team working means that you are permitting your employees to be able to ask and then drive forward and unpick that curious niggle.
What if your Engineering team spoke to your customers? What if your Customer Success team helped design your landing page?
We all have a keen skill set, and that’s why we’ve got to where we are in our careers. But, if we lose the capability of being open to what others may have to offer and say, we might lose that capability to grow and scale. Imagine a business where everyone can say they know what the overriding business goal is. What your OKRs are to help you scale and succeed?
Imagine what strength and success can come from allowing YOUR people to have a curious mind!
