Harnessing the Fear!

I thought it was symbolic this morning when I opened my curtains and saw this brave chap cleaning the windows of a 12-story hotel in Glasgow. It reminded me of a conversation I had with my colleague yesterday about fear.

We discussed the two types of fear:

1. Fear that drives you on
2. Fear that debilitates you

And a fine line that divides the two.

I aligned it to my situation and feelings this morning. Day 1 of my new career path, I felt giddy and excited, but also a bit of fear. I’m trying to use that fear to drive me on.

Fear that helps us progress is the type that acknowledges you might be a bit out of your depth, a bit into the unknown, and that because you have no way of knowing how things will pan out, you can use this fear to shape and drive personal growth. My motivation sits side by side with fear.

I thought fear could sit alongside attributes that give us the confidence to give things a go! In this case, the brave chap was skilled at his job, had undertaken the necessary safety precautions (harnessed up!), and was just getting the job done.

Maybe it was his first gig or he had done it a thousand times. I couldn’t be sure. And on the outside, no one would know. It’s only what’s going on in our heads that’s holding us back at times.

Feel the fear - and do it anyway! (someone once said 😅)
